Reaching the Target Audience

http://www.adweek.com/news/advertising-branding/ad-day-toyota-135087

In this Toyota ad, for their HiLux pickup truck, a man is working on his truck, when it accidentally rolls off the cliff.  He then becomes extremely saddened by this, and cannot think about anything but this truck.  He even cries about the loss truck. At the end of the commercial, he finds that the truck is okay and that it safely landed on the beach when it fell off of the cliff.

Toyota's goal in this ad is to reach their target market (young, working males) through the use of emotion.  They also show the durability of the truck, by having the truck fall off the cliff and still be safe.

1)  Given that men are not usually emotional people, and studies show that appealing to emotions is a technique that is most effective  to women, do you think this ad is an effective way to advertise to men?
2)  Does this ad pose problems of alienating other potential targets?
3)  Overall, does this ad do a good job of reaching their target market with their message?

Communicating with the Target

Pepsi changed the can of their Diet Pepsi to a skinny can, to emphasize on the lack of calories that are present in their drink.  The message that they are attempting to get across is that drinking Diet Pepsi can potentially help you lose weight.  They also have a woman drinking the Pepsi in the ad, in order to reach out to women as potential clients of the Diet Pepsi brand.

1)  Do you think this ad brings about negative stereotypes associated with women and weight?
2)  Is this an effective way for Pepsi to advertise to women? Does it get the message across?
3)  Was it necessary for Pepsi to change their can?
