On October 14, Australian band, Yolanda Be Cool, announced at a faux press conference an international product recall of their hit single “We No Speak Americano.” This is part of the marketing campaign for their new album that is centered around getting people to move on from their 2010 hit. They’ve asked that fans remove the song from their playlists and that radio stations and DJs stop playing it. The band has also had the song removed from iTunes Australia and the download links have been taken off their website and Facebook page. Fans can, however, visit YolandaRecall.com ans their Facebook page to download a free replacement track off their new album. Many of the comments on Facebook and YouTube are positive and say that the marketing tactic is genius.
Discussion:
- Do you think that this is a good tactic and will people actually follow through with removing the song?
- Do you think people will purchase their album or their new single?
- Do you think people will react negatively?
